How our motorway and a-road recovery service works

Breaking down on a motorway or fast dual carriageway is dangerous. If you can, leave at the next exit or pull onto the hard shoulder or an emergency area. Switch on your hazard lights, get out on the passenger side and wait behind the barrier, well away from the traffic.

If you are stuck in a live lane, stay in the car with your seat belt on and call 999. Once you are safe, call us with the road, direction of travel and nearest junction or marker post. We cover the main routes through Dorset and the New Forest, including the A31, A35, A338, A350 and A37, the A303 and the M27 near Cadnam.

Motorway and A-road recovery: common questions

How do I tell you where I am on a motorway?

Look for the small blue driver location signs at the side of the road. They show the road, direction and distance, and reading them out tells us exactly where you are.

Should I stay in my car on the hard shoulder?

No, unless it is unsafe to get out. Leave by the passenger door and wait behind the barrier. Only stay in the car, with your seat belt on, if you are stopped in a live lane, and call 999.

Do you cover the A31 and A35?

Yes. As well as motorways, we recover vehicles from fast A-roads and dual carriageways across the area, 24 hours a day.
